Know Better Learn Faster

Remember that one time when I wrote a blurb? Let’s do it again!

Know Better Learn Faster, the second album by San Franciscans Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down (bassist Adam Thompson and drummer Willis Thompson), is a quintessential break-up album if there ever was one. It’s full of songs of disappointment, frustration, bitterness, wanting to be wanted, etc. This all sounds rather depressing. Oddly enough, it’s rather the opposite. Nguyen sweetens up her sad songs with sugary melodies, jangly guitars, swooning strings, trumpets, and the occasional groove. It’s like she says in the final track, “Easy:” “Sad people dance too.” Rarely have I heard a better album for sad people.

Next, Summer’s here, which means I kick back and may or may not forget to listen to and review Äppelnyckarjazz.
